Cameras capture light. Cinematographers use special cameras and lenses to capture light and turn it into moving pictures. They decide what angle to film from, how close or far the camera is from the action, and how to make every shot look beautiful.

Light tells stories. Lighting is one of the most important tools cinematographers have. Bright light can make a scene feel happy and cheerful, while shadows and dim light can create mystery or drama.

Color sets the mood. Cinematographers choose colors to match the feeling of a scene. A superhero movie might use bright, bold colors, while a sad or serious movie might use darker, duller tones.

Movement creates excitement. How the camera moves matters too! A shaky camera can feel chaotic or scary, while a smooth, gliding camera can feel elegant or peaceful.

What viewers see. Every shot you see in a movie, from close-ups of an actor's face to wide views of a huge landscape, has been carefully planned by the cinematographer to tell the story in the best way possible.
