No Strings Attached. Unlike an orchestra, concert bands have no violins, violas, cellos, or other string instruments. Instead, they use woodwinds like flutes and clarinets, brass like trumpets and trombones, and percussion like drums and timpani to fill the sound.

Many Names, One Sound. Concert bands go by lots of different names: wind bands, wind ensembles, symphonic bands, and symphonic winds. No matter what you call them, they all do the same thing, which is create rich, layered music together.

Mix and Match Instruments. Most concert bands stick with traditional woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments, but some groups add pianos, harps, electric guitars, or synthesizers to make their sound unique and modern.

Big Group, Big Sound. Concert bands need lots of players because each instrument family has many different voices, from high piccolos to deep tubas, that blend together to make powerful music.
