Constitution Day and Citizenship Day

The Constitution was signed. On September 17, 1787, delegates met in Philadelphia and signed the U.S. Constitution, which is the document that explains how the American government works.

Congress made it official. In 1952, the U.S. Congress decided that September 17 would be Constitution Day and Citizenship Day so Americans could celebrate and remember this important document.

Week-long celebration. Constitution Day starts Constitution Week, which lasts from September 17 to September 23, giving people a whole week to learn about and celebrate the Constitution.

Honoring new citizens. The day celebrates both the Constitution itself and people who have recently become U.S. citizens, recognizing them as full members of the American community.

Learning about rights. Constitution Day is a great time for people to learn about the freedoms and rights that the Constitution gives to all Americans.
