Joystick control. You use a joystick at the front of the machine to move the claw left, right, and forward over a pile of prizes inside a glass box.
Stuffed toy prizes. Most claw machines are filled with stuffed animals, plushies, and other small toys that you can win if your claw grabs them successfully.
Lit glass box. The glass cabinet is lit from the inside so you can see all the prizes clearly and watch your claw as it tries to pick them up.
Coin-operated fun. You drop coins into the machine to get a turn, and if your claw successfully grabs a prize, it drops down a chute for you to collect.
UFO catcher name. In Japan, these machines are called UFO catchers because the metal claw looks like a flying saucer from a science fiction movie.
