First woman doctor. Elizabeth Blackwell graduated from medical school in 1849, making her the first woman in the United States to earn a medical degree. At the time, it was extremely unusual for women to pursue careers in medicine.

Born in England. Blackwell was born in England but moved to the United States as a teenager with her family. She lived and worked in both countries throughout her life.

Opened a medical college. Blackwell didn't just become a doctor herself, she helped start a medical school for women so other women could follow in her footsteps and get proper medical training.

Cared for poor patients. She was a social reformer who believed in helping people who didn't have much money. She opened a clinic in New York City to provide medical care to people who couldn't afford regular doctors.

Medal named after her. Today, the Elizabeth Blackwell Medal is given out every year to women who have done amazing things to help other women become doctors and medical professionals.
