Smoke Hood Hero. Garrett Morgan invented a protective 'smoke hood' that covered your face and helped you breathe safely in thick smoke. He used it himself during a dangerous tunnel construction disaster in 1916 to rescue trapped workers.

Traffic Light Pioneer. Morgan invented a three-way traffic light in 1923 that made intersections much safer. His invention added an important middle signal between 'go' and 'stop' to give drivers and walkers time to prepare.

Hair Care Business. Morgan started the 'G. A. Morgan Hair Refining Company' to sell hair-straightening cream and other hair products. This business made him successful and allowed him to help his community.

Community Leader. Beyond inventing, Garrett Morgan worked hard to help African Americans in Cleveland, Ohio gain better rights and opportunities. He showed that inventors could also be powerful voices for change.
