Father of Railways. George Stephenson earned this famous title because he designed and built the first practical steam locomotive that actually worked well enough to carry passengers. He showed the world that trains could be faster and more useful than horses for travel.

Set the Track Width. Stephenson decided that railway tracks should be 4 feet and 8.5 inches apart, called Stephenson gauge. Most of the world's railways still use this exact same width today, which shows how influential his choice was.

Mechanical Genius. Stephenson wasn't just an inventor, but an engineer who understood how machines worked. He improved steam engines and figured out clever solutions to problems that no one had solved before.

Learned by Doing. Stephenson taught himself engineering through hard work and curiosity rather than going to fancy schools. The Victorians loved his story because it showed that anyone with determination could become great.

Changed Transportation Forever. Before Stephenson's railways, people traveled by horse and carriage, which was slow and tiring. His invention made it possible to move people and goods quickly across entire countries.
