Peak pirate period. The Golden Age of Piracy lasted about 80 years, from the 1650s to the 1730s, when ships sailed across the North Atlantic and Indian Oceans. During this time, piracy wasn't just a rare crime, it was a major force that affected trade and exploration worldwide.

Wealthy targets. Pirates didn't just rob anyone, they hunted merchant ships carrying valuable cargo like spices, gold, and silk between Europe and Asia. These trading ships were packed with treasure, making them perfect targets for bold raiders looking to get rich quick.

Ocean highways. The North Atlantic and Indian Oceans were the main pirate hotspots because that's where all the busy trade routes crossed. Pirates would wait in hidden coves and islands to ambush merchant vessels traveling these watery highways.

Dangerous business. Pirates were feared across the seas, and many nations sent navy ships to hunt them down and stop their raids. This led to epic sea battles and chases that became legends told for centuries.

End of an era. By the 1730s, stronger navies and better protection for merchant ships made piracy much harder and less profitable, so the Golden Age finally came to an end.
