First African American in space. On August 30, 1983, Guion Bluford launched aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on a mission called STS-8, making him the first African American to reach space. This was a historic moment that inspired many people around the world.

Four shuttle missions. Between 1983 and 1992, Bluford flew on four different Space Shuttle missions, which means he went to space multiple times when most astronauts only get one or two chances.

Top pilot and engineer. Before becoming an astronaut, Bluford was an Air Force fighter pilot and aerospace engineer, skills that made him perfectly suited for space exploration. He eventually reached the rank of colonel in the Air Force.

Major hall of fame honors. Bluford's incredible achievements earned him spots in three different halls of fame: the International Space Hall of Fame, the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, and the National Aviation Hall of Fame. These honors recognize the best and most important people in space and aviation history.
