House of Habsburg

royalty · European history · empires · dynasties

Started small. The Habsburgs began as rulers of a tiny region in Switzerland around a castle called Habsburg, which is where they got their family name. From this small beginning, they slowly built one of the greatest powers in the world.

Ruled enormous areas. At their peak, the Habsburgs controlled the Holy Roman Empire, which covered much of Europe, plus Spain and its colonies in the Americas. Their lands stretched across so many countries that the sun never set on their empire.

Masters of marriage. The Habsburgs became powerful partly by marrying into other royal families strategically. These smart marriages helped them gain control of new lands without fighting wars.

Ruled for centuries. The Habsburg family stayed in power from the Middle Ages all the way into the 1900s, making them one of the longest lasting royal dynasties ever.

Patrons of arts. The Habsburgs loved supporting artists, musicians, and builders, which is why many beautiful castles, paintings, and musical compositions were created during their rule.
