Cool Facts
Ancient diving hunter. Hesperornis was a cormorant-like bird that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, millions of years ago when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth. It was specially built for diving underwater to catch fish, like modern diving birds today.
Ocean explorer. This bird lived in shallow ancient seas that covered North America, particularly in areas that are now Kansas and Canada. Scientists have found its fossilized bones preserved in rocks that were once ocean bottoms.
Rare fossil find. Hesperornis was discovered by a famous paleontologist named O. C. Marsh during the Bone Wars, a time when scientists competed to find dinosaur fossils in the 1800s. It was one of the earliest birds ever found as a fossil.
Nine species known. Scientists have identified nine different species of Hesperornis, with eight found in North America and one discovered in Russia. This shows the bird lived across a wide area during ancient times.
Bird relative. Hesperornis belonged to a group called ornithurans, which were early relatives of modern birds. Its fossils help us understand how birds first evolved and adapted to life in the oceans.
