Snowy white walls. Himeji Castle has a gleaming white exterior that makes it look completely different from other old castles. People call it Shirasagi-jō, which means 'white heron castle,' because its shape and color remind them of a bird spreading its wings.

Super smart defenses. The castle was built with advanced defensive systems during Japan's feudal period to protect people and treasures. Its complex design with 83 different structures made it nearly impossible for enemies to attack.

Hilltop location. Himeji Castle sits on top of a hill in Hyōgo Prefecture, which gave defenders a huge advantage in spotting enemies from far away. The high position made the castle even harder to reach.
