First Grand Canyon expedition. In 1869, John Wesley Powell led a daring three-month journey down the Green and Colorado rivers through the Grand Canyon. This was the first official U.S. government-sponsored passage through the massive canyon, mapping and studying the landscape along the way.

Explorer with one arm. Powell lost his right arm in the American Civil War, but this didn't stop him from becoming one of the greatest explorers of the American West. He navigated dangerous rapids and rocky terrain with skill and determination.

Leader of science institutions. After his famous river expedition, Powell became the director of major scientific organizations, including the U.S. Geological Survey. He helped establish how the U.S. government studied and understood the natural world.

Mapped the wild West. Powell explored vast regions of the American West that were largely unmapped and unstudied by the U.S. government. His work provided crucial geographic information about the landscape, geology, and challenges of western expansion.
