Three-year-old champions. Only horses that are exactly three years old can race in the Kentucky Derby, making it a special competition where young Thoroughbreds show their speed and strength.

1.25-mile sprint. Horses thunder down the track for 1 and 1/4 miles, which is long enough to test their stamina but quick enough to stay exciting from start to finish.

Weight handicap for fairness. Male horses (colts and geldings) carry 126 pounds while female horses (fillies) carry 121 pounds to account for differences in their typical size and strength.

Held at Churchill Downs. The race takes place every year in Louisville, Kentucky, at a famous racetrack called Churchill Downs that has hosted the Derby since 1875.

Grade I prestige. Being a Grade I stakes race means it's one of the most important and challenging horse races in North America, attracting the best Thoroughbreds in the country.
