Windmill wonderland. Kinderdijk has 19 beautiful windmills built in the 1700s to pump water out of low-lying areas. These iconic structures are now a UNESCO World Heritage site that attracts visitors from all over the world.

Fighting the floods. The windmills were built to solve a serious problem: the land around Kinderdijk sits below sea level, so water would collect there after rainstorms. The windmills pumped water up into channels that led safely to the sea.
