Expert sound copycat. Lyrebirds can mimic the calls of other birds, animals, and even human-made sounds like chainsaws and car alarms with incredible accuracy. They use these copied sounds to attract mates and defend their territory.

Spectacular tail display. Male lyrebirds have enormous, strikingly beautiful tails that they fan out during courtship displays to impress females. The tail feathers have unique neutral colors and create a stunning visual performance.

Ground-dwelling Australians. Lyrebirds live on the ground in Australia and are among the country's most famous native birds. There are two species of lyrebirds, and both belong to their own special bird family called Menuridae.

Natural performers. When a male lyrebird wants to attract a mate, he creates an elaborate show that combines his amazing sound effects with his tail display. This performance is one of nature's most impressive courtship acts.
