First African-American woman in space. In 1992, Mae Jemison traveled to space as a mission specialist on the Space Shuttle Endeavour. This made her a trailblazer and inspiration to people everywhere.

Trained as a doctor and engineer. Before becoming an astronaut, Mae studied engineering and medicine, giving her amazing skills for exploring space. This combination of knowledge made her incredibly valuable to NASA.

Orbited Earth for eight days. During her mission in September 1992, the Space Shuttle Endeavour circled around our planet for almost a week and a half. She conducted important scientific experiments while floating in microgravity.

Joined NASA in 1987. Mae became part of NASA's astronaut corps just five years before her historic space flight. She worked hard to prepare for her mission and prove she belonged among the stars.
