Cool Facts
Honeycomb caps. Morels have a distinctive appearance with a bumpy, pitted surface that looks exactly like a honeycomb or a tiny brain. This special pattern is made of ridges and pits that cover their entire caps.
Sac fungi family. Morels are special fungi called sac fungi, which means they release their spores in little sac-like structures. They're closely related to simpler cup fungi, and they all belong to an order called Pezizales.
Chef's favorite. Morels are edible and considered a delicacy by chefs and food lovers everywhere. People hunt for them in forests during spring, and they taste nutty and earthy.
Spring foraging. Morels fruit (produce their visible caps) in spring when the soil warms up, making them a seasonal treasure that foragers eagerly look for each year. Finding them requires patience and knowledge of where to search.
Unique structure. Unlike many other mushrooms, morels have a hollow chamber inside their caps under the honeycomb surface. This hollow interior is one of the things that makes them so special and distinctive among fungi.
