Mountain Goat

Master cliff climbers. Mountain goats are so sure-footed that they can walk on sheer rock faces and near-vertical cliffs that would terrify most animals. Their special hooves and strong legs let them navigate icy passages and steep terrain where predators cannot follow.

High-altitude specialists. These goats live in the remote, rugged mountains of western North America, staying in subalpine and alpine zones where few other animals can survive. The extreme elevation of their habitat is their best defense against dangerous predators.

Predators below. Mountain goats generally stay high up to avoid black bears, brown bears, pumas, and wolves that hunt in lower elevations. Only during food shortages or bad weather do they risk coming down from their mountain homes.

Specialized hooves. Mountain goats have cloven feet (split hooves) with special features that grip rock surfaces like climbing shoes. These adaptations make them some of the best climbers in the animal kingdom.
