Cool Facts
Cheese is key. The basic nacho is really just tortilla chips covered with melted cheese or cheese sauce. But you can pile on so much more if you want.
Toppings galore. Nachos can have meat, vegetables, salsa, guacamole, sour cream, and more. You can make simple nachos for a snack or fancy ones big enough for a whole meal.
Named after Nacho. A Mexican restaurateur named Ignacio 'Nacho' Anaya created nachos in 1943 at a restaurant called the Victory Club in Piedras Negras, Mexico. He made them for American customers who wanted something special.
Crispy base. Nachos start with tortilla chips, which are sometimes called totopos. These chips are the crunchy foundation that holds all the yummy toppings.
