Created by Alfred Nobel. Alfred Nobel was a Swedish inventor who left money in his will in 1895 to create five prizes. He wanted to honor people doing amazing work in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and peace.

Started in 1901. The first Nobel Prizes were handed out in 1901, just six years after Alfred Nobel died. The physics prize has been given out almost every single year since then.

Swedish Academy decides. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, a group of top scientists in Sweden, chooses who wins the Nobel Prize in Physics each year based on their groundbreaking discoveries.

Outstanding contributions. Winners are picked because they made discoveries that helped mankind understand how the universe works, from tiny atoms to giant stars and everything between.

One of five prizes. Physics is just one of five Nobel Prizes. The others go to chemistry, medicine, literature, and peace work, celebrating human excellence across different fields.
