Cool Facts
Map and compass. Orienteers carry a special detailed map that shows trees, hills, and streams. They use a compass to figure out which direction to go, so they can find their way through forests and across fields without getting lost.
Speed and smarts. It's not just about running fast. Orienteers have to be smart about which path to take, because the quickest route on the ground might not be the one you see on the map.
Finding checkpoints. Throughout the course, there are secret spots called control points marked on the map. You have to visit each one in order and punch a special card to prove you were there.
Real wild places. Orienteering happens in forests, parks, and mountains where most people don't run. It teaches you to understand the land and feel confident exploring new places.
Sport for everyone. From young kids to adults, people of all ages compete in orienteering races. Some are short fun courses, and others are super challenging competitions that last for hours.
