Simple but smart. Checkers uses uniform game pieces that all move the same way (mostly forward diagonally), making it easier to learn than chess but still full of clever strategy.

Jump to capture. The key move in checkers is jumping over an opponent's piece to capture it, which is mandatory if you can make that move.

Ancient game. Checkers was developed from an older game called alquerque, which means the game has roots going back hundreds of years.

Checkered board. The game's name comes from the checked pattern of the board, while the British call it 'draughts' which comes from the word 'to move.'

Reach the end. When a regular piece reaches the far end of the board, it gets crowned and becomes a king, which can move backward and forward.
