Cool Facts
Huge flooded grassland. The Pantanal is bigger than the state of Florida and stretches across Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay. During rainy season, it becomes a massive shallow lake that supports incredible amounts of wildlife.
๐บ
Seasonal water changes. Unlike regular swamps that stay wet year-round, the Pantanal floods and drains with the seasons. This means the landscape completely changes throughout the year, sometimes turning grassy plains into water-filled lakes.
๐
Multiple ecosystems. The Pantanal isn't just one habitat but up to 12 different subregions, each with its own unique mix of water patterns, soil, and plants. This variety creates homes for an amazing range of animals.
Wildlife paradise. Because the Pantanal floods and creates so much food, it attracts jaguars, capybaras, caimans, anacondas, and hundreds of bird species all living together.
Located in South America. The Pantanal sits mostly in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, making it one of the most important natural areas on the continent.
