Cool Facts
Made from oil and gas. Most plastic starts as crude oil or natural gas from deep underground. These materials are heated and broken down into smaller pieces that link together to form long chains called polymers, which create plastic.
Can be molded into anything. Plastic's special superpower is that it can be stretched, bent, melted, and pressed into almost any shape you can imagine. This is why we use it for everything from phone cases to playground equipment.
Light and tough. Plastic weighs much less than metal or glass, but it's still really strong and hard to break. This makes it perfect for things like backpacks, helmets, and water bottles that need to survive bumps and drops.
New eco-friendly versions. Scientists are creating plastic from renewable materials like plants instead of only using oil. These new plastics break down more easily and help reduce pollution.
Resists chemicals well. Plastic doesn't get damaged by most liquids and chemicals, which is why it's great for storing cleaning supplies and medicines safely.
