Master of light. Rembrandt was famous for the way he painted light and shadow, creating dramatic scenes that made his paintings look like they were glowing from inside. This special technique made him one of the most admired painters in history.
Incredibly prolific. Rembrandt created about three hundred paintings, three hundred etchings, and several hundred drawings during his lifetime. That's an enormous amount of artwork, showing how dedicated and talented he was.
Dutch Golden Age. Rembrandt lived and worked during the Dutch Golden Age, a time when the Netherlands was powerful and wealthy, and art and culture flourished. He was one of the most important artists of this remarkable period.
Different art forms. Rembrandt wasn't just a painter, he was also a master printmaker and draughtsman who created etchings and drawings. This made him skilled in many different artistic techniques.
Painted real people. Many of Rembrandt's most famous works show ordinary Dutch people and rich merchants, painted with such honesty and depth that you can almost feel who they were as people.
