A brand new constitution. On January 26, 1950, India adopted a written constitution that laid out all the rules for how the country would be governed. This document replaced British colonial laws and gave India its own government system.

Became a republic. Republic Day marks when India officially became a republic, meaning the power comes from the people rather than a king or queen. India had gained independence from British rule in 1947, but Republic Day was when the new constitution took effect.

National celebration. On January 26th, Indians celebrate with parades, flag hoisting ceremonies, and cultural performances across cities and towns. The biggest parade happens in New Delhi with floats, military displays, and performances showing India's traditions.

Constitution Day too. Republic Day is also called Constitution Day because it honors Dr. Ambedkar and the team who drafted India's constitution, one of the longest and most detailed constitutions in the world.

Freedom and equality. The constitution that took effect on this day guaranteed rights and freedoms to all Indian citizens, including the right to vote and equal treatment regardless of caste or religion.
