Robert Boyle

Father of Modern Chemistry. Robert Boyle lived in the 1600s and is considered the first modern chemist because he believed you should test your ideas with experiments instead of just thinking about them.

Boyle's Law Discovery. Boyle discovered that when you squeeze a gas into a smaller space, it pushes back harder, which scientists today still call Boyle's Law and use all the time.

Pioneering Experiments. He was one of the first scientists to do careful, step-by-step experiments and write down exactly what he found, which became the foundation for how science is done today.

Against Old Ideas. Boyle challenged ancient Greek scientists who said everything was made of just four elements (earth, water, air, and fire), and he proved that matter was made of tiny particles he called corpuscles.

Curious About Everything. Besides chemistry, Boyle invented things, studied physics, wrote about his ideas, and even tried alchemy, showing that great scientists are curious about the world in many different ways.
