First Black student. On November 14, 1960, Ruby Bridges walked into William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans as the first African American child to attend the formerly all-white school. She was only six years old.

Walked with courage. Ruby had to walk through crowds of angry protesters to get to school each day, but she kept going. Her bravery inspired people around the world who were fighting for equal rights.

Painted by Rockwell. Famous artist Norman Rockwell painted a picture of Ruby called "The Problem We All Live With" in 1964, showing her walking to school with a brave expression on her face. This painting became one of the most important artworks about civil rights.

Changed the law. Ruby's courageous actions helped end school segregation and showed that real change was possible, even when it seemed impossible. Her story inspired many other children and families to stand up for what is right.

Still an activist. Today, Ruby Bridges continues to speak about civil rights and teaches people about the importance of treating everyone equally, no matter the color of their skin.
