Added at checkout. When you buy something at a store, the cashier adds sales tax to your total bill. This extra money goes to the government to pay for schools, roads, and other public services.

The seller collects it. The store doesn't keep the sales tax you pay. Instead, the seller collects it from customers and sends it to the government regularly.

Different everywhere. Not all places charge the same sales tax. Some states charge more, some charge less, and a few don't charge it at all. It depends on local laws.

Not always charged. Some items like groceries or medicine might not have sales tax added, even though toys or clothes do. The government decides which things are taxed.

A way to fund services. The money from sales taxes helps governments build and maintain things that everyone uses, like libraries, fire departments, and public parks.
