Born into slavery. Sojourner Truth was born enslaved in Swartekill, New York, but she refused to accept that life. In 1826, she escaped to freedom and took her baby daughter with her to build a better future.

Won in court. In 1828, Sojourner Truth went to court to get her son back after he was sold away. She became the first Black woman to win a legal case against a white man, proving that justice was possible even in a deeply unfair system.

Powerful speaker. Sojourner Truth traveled around America giving speeches about freedom and equality. Her words were so moving and inspiring that people came from far and wide to hear her speak about ending slavery and giving women their rights.

Fought for many causes. She didn't just fight against slavery. Sojourner Truth also worked to stop people from drinking alcohol and to give women the same rights as men, showing that one person can stand up for many important things.
