Born in Ancient Greece. The word stadium comes from a famous race at Olympia in ancient Greece that was one stadion long, which is about 600 feet. For about 50 years, this single race was the only event at the ancient Olympic festival.

Home of Football. Most of the world's largest stadiums, ones that hold at least 10,000 people, are used for soccer (association football). These stadiums can hold tens of thousands of fans cheering for their favorite teams.

More than Sports. Big stadiums aren't just for games anymore. Many of them host giant concerts and other performances, turning the same field where athletes play into a stage for music and entertainment.

Going Green. Modern stadiums are getting smarter by using features like energy-efficient lighting, solar panels, and better recycling systems to protect the environment while hosting events.

All Kinds of Action. Beyond soccer, stadiums host gridiron football, baseball, cricket, rugby, lacrosse, and even bullfighting, each sport needing its own special field design for fans to enjoy.
