Cool Facts
Steam cooks food. When water boils, it turns into steam, which is so hot it cooks food perfectly. The steam wraps around the food and transfers heat to cook it through.
No oil needed. Unlike frying, steaming doesn't use oil or grease, which makes it a much healthier way to cook vegetables, fish, and other foods while keeping all their nutrients.
Ancient cooking method. People in the American Southwest were steaming food in special pits about 5,000 years ago, long before kitchen appliances were invented.
Works for everything. You can steam almost any food: vegetables, fish, dumplings, rice, and even fruits. A food steamer or even a wok can do the job.
Keeps food tender. Steaming cooks food gently and evenly, so vegetables stay colorful and crisp, and fish stays moist and flaky instead of dry.
