Tiny plant-eater. Thecodontosaurus was only about 2 meters (6.6 feet) long, making it much smaller than the giant sauropods that came later. It munched on plants and walked upright on its two back legs.
One of the oldest. This dinosaur lived during the late Triassic period, when dinosaurs were just beginning to appear on Earth. It is one of the first dinosaurs ever discovered and one of the oldest that ever existed.
Found in England. Scientists know about Thecodontosaurus mostly from fossils found in southern England, preserved in special rock formations called fissure fillings where ancient bones got stuck in cracks.
Mystery species. Many different species of Thecodontosaurus were named over time, but today scientists believe only one type, Thecodontosaurus antiquus, was real.
