Young inventor. Theodore Timby was born in Dutchess County, New York in 1819 and showed his inventive spirit early on. At just 16 years old, he figured out how to raise ships out of the water for repairs using a clever system of water-filled boxes and pumps.
Ship-raising genius. His method involved sinking a special box filled with water underneath a ship, then pumping the water out to make it rise up. This let workers repair ship hulls without having to drag the entire ship onto land.
Revolving turret. Timby's most famous invention was the rotating gun turret, which could spin around to aim cannons in any direction. This design was used on the USS Monitor, making it a game-changing warship during the Civil War.
Monitor's secret weapon. The revolving turret on the USS Monitor made it incredibly powerful because the guns could fire at targets all around the ship. This was revolutionary compared to older warships where cannons were stuck pointing in one direction.
