Underground bulbs. Tulips grow from bulbs buried in the soil, which store energy so the plant can burst into bloom when spring arrives.

Rainbow of colors. Tulips come in red, orange, pink, yellow, white, and many shades in between, often with a different colored blotch at the base of their petals.

Part of lily family. Tulips are cousins to lilies and belong to a big plant family called Liliaceae that has many beautiful flowering plants.

Come back yearly. Tulips are perennials, which means the bulbs can stay in the ground and grow new flowers year after year.

Many varieties exist. Tulips come in so many different types that scientists have had a hard time organizing and naming them all.
