Shadow puppet magic. Wayang uses intricately carved puppets held behind a backlit screen so audiences see beautiful silhouettes dancing and fighting. The puppeteer, called a dalang, moves the puppets while telling epic stories that can last all night long.

All-night performances. Traditional wayang shows start at midnight and go until dawn, with audiences sitting on both sides of the screen to watch the shadows and action. It's like an ancient movie marathon that celebrates stories and brings communities together.

Gamelan orchestra magic. While the dalang performs, a gamelan orchestra plays traditional Indonesian music to match every moment of the story, making the shadows feel even more alive and exciting. In Bali, they use a special type called gender wayang.

Epic mythology tales. Wayang most often tells stories from ancient Hindu epics called the Ramayana and Mahabharata, which are thousands of years old and beloved across Asia. Local Indonesian legends and adaptations also become wayang stories.

Artist and spiritual leader. The dalang isn't just a puppeteer but also a respected spiritual guide in the community who understands the deep meanings in these ancient stories.
