Massive torchlit parade. Hundreds of costumed people march through the streets of Shetland carrying blazing torches in a dramatic procession that lights up the night sky.

Viking ship burns. At the end of the parade, everyone tosses their torches onto a wooden model of a Viking galley ship, creating a roaring bonfire that's visible from far away.

Incredible costumes. Participants dress as Vikings, fantasy characters, and all sorts of creative outfits, making the festival look like a real-life adventure come to life.

Winter's goodbye party. Up Helly Aa happens between January and March to mark the end of the dark Yule season, celebrating that sunnier days are coming soon.

Shetland Island tradition. Different communities in the Shetland Islands north of Scotland each hold their own version of this ancient festival, making it a beloved local custom.
