Spinning masters. Whirligig beetles zoom around in circles on water when they get scared, which is how they got their fun name. They can swim super fast in these wild patterns to confuse predators and escape danger.

Double vision eyes. These beetles have something amazing: their eyes are split in half, with one part looking up at the air and the other part looking down into the water, all at the same time. This lets them watch for threats from both directions without moving their heads.

Water surface surfers. Whirligig beetles spend most of their time floating and skating across the top of the water like tiny ice skaters. When danger strikes, they can quickly dive underwater to hide and hunt for food.

Sleek streamlined shape. Their bodies are perfectly shaped like smooth ovals with all their legs tucked in tight, making them super aerodynamic for zooming through water. This special design helps them move fast and smooth with almost no resistance.

Huge beetle family. There are about 700 different species of whirligig beetles living all around the world, but they all look pretty similar in shape and size, ranging from tinier than a rice grain to about the size of a small pea.
