Capture the sound. Audio engineers place microphones carefully around instruments, voices, and sound sources to pick up exactly the right amount of each noise. They then adjust the levels so nothing gets too quiet or too loud.

Balance and shape. Using special equipment called equalization and effects, engineers boost some sounds and reduce others to make everything blend together perfectly. It's like being a conductor for all the different noises.

Live or recorded. Audio engineers work both in studios making recordings and at concerts controlling the speakers and sound for thousands of people. Each job uses different skills and equipment to get the best possible sound.

Technical problem solvers. Engineers figure out tricky things like where to place microphones to avoid echoes, what settings work best for different instruments, and how to fix audio problems. They need to understand both music and technology.
