Ancient inspiration. The Boston Marathon was created after the first-ever Olympic marathon at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Greece. Organizers loved the idea so much they started their own race in Boston just one year later.

Patriots' Day tradition. Every year, the marathon happens on Patriots' Day, which is the third Monday of April. This special Massachusetts holiday celebrates the American Revolution, making the race part of local history.

Long city route. The 26-mile course starts in the town of Hopkinton and winds through eight different cities and towns before finishing on famous Boylston Street in downtown Boston near Copley Square.

Elite competition series. The Boston Marathon is one of only seven World Marathon Majors, which means it ranks alongside races in London, Berlin, New York City, Chicago, Tokyo, and Sydney. Points from these races determine who are the best marathon runners in the world.

Oldest annual race. The Boston Marathon has been held every single year since 1897, making it the world's longest-running yearly marathon race.
