Teacher in space. Christa McAuliffe was selected from thousands of applicants to be the first teacher to fly on the Space Shuttle Challenger. She planned to teach lessons from orbit to show students around the world what space exploration was really like.

From New Hampshire. Christa grew up in Concord, New Hampshire, where she worked as a high school teacher before becoming an astronaut. Her hometown was so proud of her achievement.

The Challenger disaster. Sadly, the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds after launch on January 28, 1986, killing all seven crew members aboard, including Christa. It was one of the most tragic moments in space exploration history.

Inspired by learning. Christa believed that teaching from space would inspire young people to pursue science and careers in space exploration. Her dream showed how important it was to share the wonder of discovery with students.

Legacy lives on. Though her life ended tragically, Christa McAuliffe is remembered as a hero who showed that teachers and astronauts share a special mission to inspire others.
