What they do. Composers write down musical notes and instructions that tell musicians what to play. They decide which instruments play together, what melodies sound pretty, and how fast or slow the music should go.

Often performers too. Many famous composers like Mozart and Beethoven didn't just write music, they also played instruments really well. They understood exactly what their music should sound like because they could play it themselves.
