Underwater hot springs. Hydrothermal vents are openings in the seabed where scorching water heated by Earth's interior gushes out. This water comes from deep underground and gets incredibly hot from the heat of magma below the ocean floor.

Found near volcanoes. Hydrothermal vents are usually located near volcanically active areas and along mid-ocean ridges, where tectonic plates are pulling apart. These are the most geologically active spots on the ocean floor.

Plumes spread minerals. When hot, mineral-rich water shoots out of vents, it creates giant plumes that spread hydrothermal fluids throughout the ocean. These plumes carry valuable minerals across the seabed.

Create mineral deposits. Over time, the minerals in hydrothermal vent water build up to form rocks and ore deposits around the vents. These deposits can be rich in metals like copper, zinc, and gold.

Support strange life. Hydrothermal vents are home to unique animals like tube worms, crabs, and bacteria that survive in extreme heat and darkness by eating chemicals in the vent water instead of sunlight.
