Killer teeth. Livyatan had thick, deeply rooted teeth covered in hard enamel on both its upper and lower jaws, making it perfect for catching and holding onto massive prey like other whales and seals.

Ocean giant. This fearsome whale lived about 9 million years ago in the oceans around Peru and may have roamed the seas worldwide, leaving fossils in places like Chile, Argentina, California, and Australia.

Top predator. Livyatan was likely the king of its ocean, hunting whales, dolphins, seals, and other large sea creatures that swam in its territory.

Named after legends. Scientists named this whale after Leviathan, a famous sea monster from ancient stories, and gave its species name in honor of Herman Melville, who wrote the whale tale Moby-Dick.

Hunting expert. Unlike most modern sperm whales, Livyatan had sharp, functional teeth built for hunting large prey, making it a macroraptorial (giant-hunting) whale that was built to be a fierce ocean predator.
