Born in the 1940s. Rhythm and blues, or R&B, started in African American communities as a fresh style of music that mixed jazz and blues with a really strong, driving beat that made people want to move.

The classic band setup. In the 1950s through 1970s, R&B bands typically had a piano, one or two guitars, bass, drums, saxophones, and singers all working together to create that signature sound.
