Massive fighting force. A Roman legion could have between 4,200 and 5,200 soldiers, depending on when in history you look. That's like filling up a large school with warriors, all trained to fight together.

Built from citizens. Legionaries were Roman citizens, not hired soldiers from other places. Being in a legion was a serious commitment that could last many years of service.

Organized into cohorts. Legions were divided into 10 smaller units called cohorts, with the first cohort being extra strong with double the normal number of soldiers. This helped generals organize and control such a huge force.

Elite and disciplined. Legionaries were highly trained fighters with strict rules and daily practice routines. They were some of the most feared and respected soldiers of the ancient world.
