Cool Facts
Capital of Sweden. Stockholm is the biggest city in Sweden and the whole Nordic region (which includes Norway, Denmark, and Finland too). About 1 million people live right in the city itself.
Built on islands. The city is special because it stretches across 14 different islands. Lake Mälaren on one side flows right into the Baltic Sea on the other, making Stockholm feel like a water city.
Archipelago adventure. Just east of the city, there's a long chain of islands called the Stockholm archipelago stretching along the coast. It's an amazing natural area perfect for boating and exploring.
Ancient settlement. People have lived in this area since the Stone Age, going back to around 6000 BC. But the city of Stockholm itself was officially founded in 1252 by a Swedish leader named Birger Jarl.
Millions of residents. About 2.5 million people live in the whole metropolitan area around Stockholm, making it a huge urban center in Northern Europe.
