First human in space. On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin blasted off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard Vostok 1 and became the very first person ever to travel into outer space. His historic flight made him instantly famous around the world.

Orbited Earth once. During his 108-minute mission, Gagarin completed one full orbit of Earth, traveling at incredible speeds while floating in weightlessness. This single orbit proved that humans could survive in space and return safely home.
