Colorful flower faces. Pansies have big, velvety petals that come in purples, yellows, whites, blues, and even almost black. Many pansies have dark markings that look like a little face, which is why some people call them 'faces in the flowers.'

Born from wild flowers. Garden pansies were created by mixing different wild violet species from Europe and western Asia. One of their main parent plants is called heartsease, a wildflower that people have loved for hundreds of years.

Carefully bred plants. People didn't just find pansies growing wild, they specially mixed different violet plants together to create the big, showy flowers we know today. This careful mixing is called hybridization, and it takes many years to get new colors and patterns just right.

Easy to grow. Pansies are popular garden flowers because they grow well in cool weather and bloom for many months. You can plant them in spring or fall, and they'll reward you with flowers that brighten up your garden.
